Two weeks ago, a variety of screenshots leaked out of Sega revealing a new Sonic game for the PS3, PS2, Xbox 360 and Wii titled Sonic Unleashed. Today, Sega made Sonic Unleashed official and announced a late 2008 release date. The game will be adeveloped, as is always the case, by Sonic Team.

Sonic Unleashed promises a return to the classic 2D gameplay of past Sonic games. The game will use the new "Hedgehog Engine" to create a swooping, dynamic camera that showcases the 3D graphics while preserving the 2D gameplay.

Even the story goes back to the beginning, with Dr. Eggman (sadly, the Robotnik name was not dusted off as well) planning to destroy the world and only the Chaos Emeralds can put it back together again. Sonic Unleashed will also include combat fighting and levels that take place in both day and night. And when the moon rises, Werewolf Sonic will come out to play...

“By combining rich and vibrant scenery with dynamic viewpoints Sonic Unleashed will provide an immersive 3D experience whilst keeping alive the 2D gameplay elements and fantastic worlds that Sonic fans know and love” commented Gary Knight, European Marketing Director for SEGA Europe. “In addition to this classic Sonic gaming experience, when darkness sets in Sonic Unleashed players will be able to experience a completely new way to play as Sonic… making this his most exciting adventure yet!”

We'll have more soon.
