First Impressions: Mileage may vary?
BioWare is currently working on their futuristic role-playing game that's exclusive to the 360. Due out later this year, Mass Effect takes players to the 23rd century in a galactic adventure. The narrative spans much greater than just this one game, as this is merely the first offering in a string of three total. Amazingly enough, the story's development won't halter between the releases of the trilogy of games. Those with online setup can continuously watch the episodic adventure progress through systematic updates.
The adventure takes place in the distant future, where technology is more advanced and people's knowledge of galactic scope is extensively greater. More specific, the human race has been blessed with a method of delving deeper into the galaxy, much deeper. In doing so, new races of artificial life are discovered, proving that life is not limited to civilization on Earth. Although this may seem like a huge leap for mankind, the desire for absolute power, just as it has throughout history, will disrupt the relations between humans and the said exterior life forms.
Mass Effect's story unravels similar to most RPGs, but the game is not necessarily played like a typical RPG. Those who hate constantly facing enemies and taking turns in dishing out an attack will not have to worry about any of that nonsense here. Aberrant in its approach, the actual play and fighting are more analogous to a regular action adventure. All battles transpire in real time; so aiming to shoot is now more vital, as fighting is no longer a back-and-forth checkers match.
Players will control a trio of characters as they explore the depths of the universe. There are two main components to exploration: piloting a space ship and uncovering each discovered world by foot. The different planets boast specific distinctions, and the dust and detritus from them actually stick to the characters. For those curious, there are even places to venture through that don't particularly pertain to a main mission, but all efforts yield some means of commission.
Whether a main mission or side mission, the characters can utilize both weapons and supernatural powers. Abilities and skills will become augmented as the story develops. Any enhancements made can be imported into the two future installments in the series. Online setup will let players really take advantage of the software, with story updates and extras that will purportedly be provided. The adventure should take some interesting turns as well, since each game in the lineup will have some sort of critical juncture.
With any role-playing game, an intricately laced story is normally the focal point. The developers are aiming for more realistic looking interactions between characters through nicely crafted cut-scenes. During dialogue, they converse with subtle mannerisms and common hand and body motions. Also, BioWare has created a narrative that enables gamers to choose multiple responses and actions. Players can opt to dutifully conquer locations with a kind heart and honorable intentions, and contrarily, a more sinister approach can be taken. Whichever road one chooses has a contagion effect on the outcome. As the story furthers, the characters can change in appearance and also become more powerful.
