From comic book to movie to video game, Judge Dredd has already made the rounds. Of course, unless you are familiar with the comic books themselves you probably don't think to highly of the character. The 1995 movie starring Sylvester Stallone was, while enjoyable if you didn't expect too much from it, laughable and the videogames from that era were disappointing, to say the least. So, what went wrong? Well, with the movie it was too far a departure from the comic books while the videogames fell prey to the same foible of most licensed video games; a lack of innovation. At its core, Dredd's universe is the perfect setting for a dark and gritty action game and I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone else gave it a go. That is exactly what Rebellion and Evolved Games are teaming up to accomplish, to give Judge Dredd the kind of treatment he's been screaming for over the last several years. Enter Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death.
For those of you that haven't caught on yet, Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death is based upon the British born comic strip 2000AD that later evolved into regularly published comic books. The world of Dredd is centered upon the 22nd century city of Mega-City One. This hub of 400 million people is just this side of total anarchy, reined in only by the law that is handed down by the Judges. The Judges have replaced the judicial system that you and I are familiar with after rampant crime rendered it obsolete. Policeman, judge, jury and executioner rolled all into one, the Judges are the be-all, end-all of Mega-City One law enforcement. Dredd is the most infamous of these Judges and strictly enforces even the most minute laws of the future.
Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death is bringing the dark and gritty setting of Mega-City One into the third dimension with a first-person shooter that is aiming to knock your socks off. With eleven chapters that flesh out the single player story, you will have plenty of opportunities to unleash justice on more than 50 unique characters including zombies, demons, undead Judges and tons of generally bad people. To help you handout the justice, you will be able to outfit your lawgiver, the multitasking standard issue sidearm of the Judges, with incendiary rounds, armor piercing bullets, ricocheting ammo, stun gas grenades... everything that you will need to keep the streets safe. Now, we all know that by singleplayer experience alone is not a great game made. That is why we can also look forward to four-player multiplayer action. With a dozen maps and sixteen gameplay modes to keep us busy, Judge Dredd should keep us off the streets and out of trouble for hours on end.
