News: You will be able to expand the internal storage of Microsoft’s upcoming console but the new tech isn’t cheap.
We have some new details about the expandable internal storage for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. This additional internal storage adds storage space to Microsoft’s new console which will allow you to have more next-gen games installed at one time. It needs to be said in order to play Xbox Series X or Series S games that you do need to play it from the internal drive. You can play games that are backward compatible on an external USB 3.0 drive, and you can store Series X/Series S games on that USB 3.0 drive, but you will need to transfer next-gen games to the internal storage to play them and take advantage of everything the next generation has to offer.
The expandable storage from Seagate is in the form of a 1TB expansion card. Installing this in the console is really easy as you have to do is remove the protective cover and then insert the card in the dedicated slot on the console. After a few seconds you will see a notification informing you that the Expansion Card is ready to go. If you happen to have multiple expansion cards, you can also “hot swap” them while buying your Xbox Series X|S console. Simply swap in the card you want to use and you’ll be good to go. You will, of course, need either the disc or Xbox Live account of the game’s owner to play.
You can even take your expansion card over to a friend’s house and use it on their Xbox Series X|S console. Simply plug it in to your friend’s console and then sign in to your Xbox Live account or insert the disc of the game you want to play. Unfortunately this new expansion card will not work on Xbox One or a PC, so keep that in mind. If you happen to fill up the internal storage and the expansion card, you can install Xbox Series X|S games on to a USB 3.0 drive, however, again, you’ll have to transfer the game you want to play to the internal storage.
This new Expansion Card by Seagate will be available for $219.99. At first glance that seems like a really high price, however, that is the price this type of technology tends to cost. Prices will come down over time obviously but this type of memory can still be really expensive, regardless of platform.
