Nintendo has informed GameSpot that a trio of very highly anticipated games will be added to the Virtual Console before the end of the year.

First up will be Super Mario Kart, the first game in the Mario Kart series. The game will be added to the Virtual Console this Monday, November 23 for the standard Super NES price of 800 Wii Points ($8). Super Mario Kart was originally released in 1992 and has been available on the Virtual Console in Japan since June.

It will be followed in December by the release of Super Smash Bros. and Pilotwings. Super Smash Bros. was added to the Virtual Console in Japan in January and in PAL territories over the Summer. So that one has been a long time coming. Pilotwings, which made "Mode 7" a household word when it launched alongside the Super NES in 1991, has also been available in Europe since the Summer.

Exact release dates and pricing (Smash Bros. sells for a premium price on the Japanese VC) were not revealed. Also not revealed was any Virtual Console release information for Earthbound, the Nintendo-published Super NES RPG that routinely tops Nintendo Power's "Reader's Most Wanted" list for additions to the Virtal Console.

We'll have more soon.
