News: Unless they can save the company from bankruptcy first.
Are you a fan of the Mortal Kombat series? You may want to sit down.
NetDockets has discovered a motion filed by Midway in their ongoing bankruptcy proceedings whereby they plan to offer financial bonuses to 29 employees in the company if three milestones are met. The first milestone involves the sale of The Wheelman to Ubisoft. The second and third milestones are connected to the entire future of the company.
The second milestone will be reached if the company submits a plan to reorganize the company and emerge from bankruptcy or finding a buyer for the Mortal Kombat franchise.
The third milestone builds on that by requiring Midway executives to either complete the sale of the Mortal Kombat series to a publisher (which would effectively kill Midway as Mortal Kombat is their most successful franchise by far) or to emerge from bankruptcy or completely liquidate the company.
How this might impact the recently announced Mortal Kombat 9 is unknown.
While there's no word who the possible suitors for Sub-Zero, Scorpion and friends might be, there's also no guarantee Midway will sell the fighting franchise. But if they do, might I make a suggestion? Sell it to Capcom so they can give us Street Fighter vs Mortal Kombat. Ed Boon has ideas for the crossover and I'm sure Capcom would love to push the newly rejuvenated Street Fighter series out to even more gamers.
We'll have more on Midway's plans for Mortal Kombat soon.
