News: And it's coming in 2010.
505 Games, a publisher that previously only released games in Europe, has announced that they've reached a deal with Michael Phelps to bring a Michael Phelps-branded video game to next generation consoles and the iPhone in Spring 2010.
First revealed on 60 Minutes two weeks ago, the game will be 505's first game published in America and it will actually be developed at the company's new Los Angeles development house.
While the smart money would be on this being a swimming game of some kind (505 said they would try to include Phelps' Olympic teammates in the game as well), that may not be the case. Swimming was barely mentioned in the press release. Instead, the game will "celebrate active lifestyles, the spirit of competition and the inspirational dream of becoming a champion" and "[w]ith 505 Games' global reach, we look forward to leveraging the powerful digital entertainment medium to bring Michael's passion for sports and competition to new audiences around the world."
However, Michael Phelps did say,"I am really excited to partner with 505 Games and work with them to develop a game that is reflective of my personality, lifestyle and competitive nature. I believe this will be a tremendous opportunity to help continue my quest to raise the profile for the sport of swimming."
Personally, I'm holding out for a Shaq-Fu style action game, but I guess we'll find out what it's really all about soon.
