It has been heavily rumored for a while but now it is official: Sony is working on the successor to PlayStation VR. This next-generation VR system will come to PlayStation 5 at some point but Sony hasn’t said when, other than to say that it won’t be released in 2021. They revealed that one of the changes is going to be a new VR controller. This controller will incorporate some of the key features from the DualShock controller, while also focusing on ergonomics. Judging by this piece of news, it is doubtful that the current PlayStation Move controllers will work with this new VR system, though that is just speculation at this point. There also wasn’t any indication on whether you will be able to play PS4 VR games on this new system on PS5. With the backward compatibility nature of PS5 as it relates to PS4 games, we should theoretically be able to do so. Sony doesn’t have a good track record with backward compatibility though so we’ll have to wait and see on this one.
Sony has stated that this is an “early update”, which means it might be a while before we really see this thing. As I mentioned up above, it definitely will not be released in 2021. Whether we see it in 2022 is also up in the air. This might be a good thing though as PlayStation 5 consoles are still really hard to find so, hopefully, by the time this new PlayStation VR unit is released, you will be able to walk into a store and get a PS5 without any issues.
Sony has said they have taken lessons from PSVR on PS4 and that this new VR system will be an improvement in pretty much every way. On the PlayStation Blog they state:
”We’re continuing to innovate with our new VR system so that our fans can continue to enjoy the unique experiences that are synonymous with PlayStation. We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. It will connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience.”
Unfortunately, there really isn’t anything else that is known at this point. Did you ever pick up a PSVR unit for PS4? Will you pick up this new VR unit for PlayStation 5? When you do think it will be released? How much do you think it will cost? We’ll be sure to update you as more details become public but tell us your thoughts in the comment section below.
