News: The Nintendo Switch continues to dominate in the marketplace and will reach over 71 million units sold by the time we get to 2021.

Throughout 2020 the gaming industry has had a pretty successful year but no one more so in terms of hardware than Nintendo. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced a lot of us to spend much more time at home this year and this has translated to a lot more people going out and trying to buy a Nintendo Switch. I mention the word “trying” because the Switch has been hard to get at different points in the year. Not as hard as the new Xbox Series X and PS5, but hard to get nonetheless.

According to data that SafeBettingSites.com has released, Nintendo has shipped over 21.1 million Switch consoles since the start of 2020. This is more than double what PlayStation and Xbox sold, combined. The Nintendo Switch launched in 2017 and sold approximately 13.1 million units that year. With that being the case you can see the trajectory that the console has taken in its almost four years on the market.

The year 2020 also saw the Switch hit an impressive milestone with it selling over 71 million units worldwide. This number includes everything from launch day in 2017 through the end of 2020. It is an impressive number to be sure and it should be interesting to see how high it will get during its time on the market. By the end of 2019 the Nintendo Switch had sold more than 49.8 million units to date, surpassing the sales of the Xbox One.

In 2020 specifically, Nintendo sold approximately 4 million units during the first quarter, a 60% jump in a year. During the second quarter of 2020, Nintendo sold approximately 5.6 million consoles, 160% more than the same period a year ago. It was also revealed via VGChartz data that another 11.6 million units were sold since June. That leads up to approximately 70,9 million Switch units sold through November 2020, with the December numbers pushing it past the 71 million mark. Keep in mind Nintendo achieved these numbers with the Switch being hard to find for consumers, thanks to COVID-19. If the console had been more readily available to consumers, who knows what the number would look like.

These sales are largely due to Nintendo’s highly successful first party library. Animal Crossing: New Horizons was by far their most successful title this year and by the time 2020 is all said in done, it will probably be the second best selling title of the year, only behind Call of Duty. During 2020 Mario Kart 8 Deluxe approached almost 26.8 million units sold as well (it launched in 2017). Super Smash Bros Ultimate has almost 20 million copies sold, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has 18.6 million units sold, and Pokemon Sword/Pokemon Shield are sitting at approximately 18.2 million units sold.

The Nintendo Switch has been a runaway success for Nintendo since launch. In addition to the aforementioned games, there are a lot more on the horizon. If rumors are to be believed the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will arrive in 2021, which will surely make that game one of the biggest to come out in 2021. There is also Super Mario 3D World Deluxe & Bowser’s Fury that will arrive in February 2021, and much more.

What do you think about this impressive showing by Nintendo? Do you have a Switch? If not, do you plan on picking one up or hope to receive one for the holidays? Tell us in the comment section below.
