News: A new title is heading to Nintendo’s portable platform that you can play like either a normal RPG or a roguelike.

”Tangledeep”

Tangledeep from Impact Gameworks is getting ready to arrive on the Nintendo Switch later this month. In Tangledeep you will get to create your character, gear up, and be able to go through dangerous terrain while facing magical beasts and ancient automatons. Tangledeep is a turn- based dungeon crawler that has a job system and a plethora of tactical choices.

On the soundtrack front, Tangledeep features the musical talents of Hiroki Kikuta (Secret of Mana), Grant Kirkhope (GoldenEye 007, Civilization: Beyond Earth), Norihiko Hibino (Metal Gear Solid 3, Bayonetta), and Andrew Aversa, the developer behind Tangledeep who is known for his contributions as “zircon” on OverClocked Remix and composer of high-profile soundtracks (Soul Calibur V, ReCore, Crypt of the NecroDancer, Fantasy Strike, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remake).

The Switch version will be available in English, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese. It will also include the following features:

  • Improved UI and controls for handheld, docked, and Pro Controller support

  • All-new monsters (such as fearsome Polarattler)

  • New area: Riverstone Waterway

  • In case you haven’t been following along with Tangledeep, the premise is below:

”For hundreds of years, people have enjoyed the peaceful tranquility of underground settlements and villages, where the only route to the surface is “Tangledeep” – a mysterious and ever-changing labyrinth. With memories of the surface world long forgotten, you set out for the labyrinth to discover what lies above...

Tangledeep features a robust and customizable job system with 12 unique jobs to master. The game also supports a number of features designed to give players the perfect level of difficulty. You can opt for the true roguelike challenge of permadeath – or simply return to town upon death, for example. It’s also possible to share progress between characters by using the banking system – or by planting magic trees and raising monsters in town.”

Tangledeep will feature procedurally-generated and handcrafted gameplay that is inspired by classic SNES-era RPGs. There will be rare items to find, quests to complete and challenging monsters to take down. There will three game modes to choose from and they include the following:

  • Heroic Mode - Defeat is not the end! Some progress and items can be shared between characters.

  • Hardcore Mode - The traditional roguelike experience. If you are defeated the game is over.

  • Adventure Mode - Play without the fear of permadeath. This mode is more like a traditional RPG.

  • One of the features of this game is the ability to capture almost every monster in the game and raise them in the Monster Corral as a pet or breed them with other monsters. There will also be 10 Game Modifiers that you can play around with that will make your game easier, harder or just a bit more wacky than normal.

Tangledeep is set to arrive on the Nintendo Switch on January 31 for $19.99. It is currently available on PC on Steam and GOG respectively. Will you be picking it up?
