E3 is in full swing and we are busy trying to see what we can. We just recently had a chance to play and capture some gameplay for Super Mario Odyssey. Our immediate first impression was that it felt great playing on two Joy-cons. You can obviously play it with a Pro controller if you so choose but for E3 demo purposes we were on the Joy-con controllers.
Mario has some of the standard controls that we are all familiar with but it has new additions as well. His hat now has a wide variety of uses. You can throw it at enemies to try and clear a path or you can throw it in front of you to use it as a platform to jump on to, to name just a couple. We went through some of New Donk City and explored some of the new ideas that Super Mario Odyssey is bringing to the table including some impressive verticality. It should be noted that (as you will see in the video) Mario does not take fall damage. If you fall from a great height he will be stunned for a moment or two when he lands but that is all that will happen. Being able to “capture” someone is also a pretty cool idea as that allows you to control what they are doing...so if you “capture” a person then you can control what they do.
There is quite a bit to Super Mario Odyssey. We only got to play for about ten minutes or so, so we didn’t get to see a whole lot but it was enough to get us excited for its release date on October 27, 2017. Check out the video below and tell us what you think. Are you excited for Super Mario Odyssey?
