News: We now know what is under the hood of Project Scorpio and early indications seem to suggest Microsoft will release the most powerful console ever.

”Xbox

Later this year Microsoft is going to release a new Xbox, codenamed “Scorpio.” It isn’t a new console in that it is the beginning of a new generation but it will be significant step up from the standard Xbox One and Xbox One S. Microsoft recently flew Digital Foundry out to Redmond to check out this new console and early indications seem to be that Microsoft is fulfilling their early promises for this machine.

The specs for the Scorpio is as follows:

  • GPU: 6 teraflops

  • CPU: Eight custom x86 cores

  • Memory bandwidth: 326 GB/s

  • 1 TB hard drive

  • RAM: 12 GB GDDR5

  • Vapor-chamber cooling

  • According to the report on Digital Foundry and Eurogamer, the GPU of the Scorpio will be 4.6 times more powerful than the standard Xbox One. It is also 30% faster and it will have improved RAM and hard drive read speeds. What this essentially means is that the Scorpio should be able to achieve 4K rather easily and still have enough power left over for other things.

The Scorpio also appears to be quite a bit more powerful than the recently released PS4 Pro console and Microsoft has stated that it should have no problem bringing up Xbox One games that might have been 900p to a 4K resolution on the Scorpio. The Scorpio will be able to play all Xbox One games and Xbox 360 games that are backwards compatible so what that essentially means is that both Xbox One games and Xbox 360 games will run and look better on Scorpio.

The article over on Eurogamer mentioned that they saw a Forza 6 demo where the Scorpio was able to hit 4K60 (4K resolution, 60 frames per second) while only using around 66% of the console’s power. To put that in a bit of perspective the standard Xbox One can run games at 1080p, 60 frames per second but that uses up 90% of the console’s power. The Scorpio appears to be a really big jump up from what we currently have but that also probably means a pretty big price point as well. We still don’t know what that price will be but with this being the most powerful console ever released and Microsoft stressing that this is a “premium” product you can probably expect a “premium” price.

Take a look at the video below from Digital Foundry and tell us what you think. Games for the Scorpio as well as the price point and the overall look of the system are set to be released at E3 in Los Angeles in a couple months. Do you plan on picking up a Scorpio when it launches later this year?
