News: Activision has revealed a new feature that Guitar Hero fans should enjoy while they are playing on GHTV.

Guitar Hero Live has been out for a little while now. It has been positively received and now Activision is adding on to it with “Rival Challenges.” Beginning today when you go into the GHTV channels you will experience the new Rival Challenges. As you play through the channels you will periodically be matched up against a similar skilled opponent to square off against each other in a song battle to test your skills.

The basic way it works is as follows:

  • To unlock Rival Challenges, you will need to be level 10 or higher. Activision made this decision because once you hit level 10, you will have gained access to Guitar Upgrades and accumulated some Hero Powers.

  • Rival Challenges will occur twice in every half-hour show. The song choices will be picked by Activision, so you’ll always need to be ready.

  • Your opponent will be of relatively close skill level, paired with you through their underlying matchmaking technology.

  • The winner of each battle earns an extra +100 Status XP, along with bragging rights of course.

  • Another bonus is showing off the personalisation items you’ve earned in GHTV. When a battle kicks off, both you and your opponent will see each other’s playercard and note highway on screen.

  • They have also added the ability to mark a song as a “favorite” to make it easier for you to revisit the songs you really like. You can do this by going in the on-demand catalog or after you play a song in one of the channels. Once you do that those songs will be marked with a heart icon to allow you to filter the list like you normally do in case you just want to see your favorites.

Finally if you have used up all of your song play tokens then Activision has revealed they will give you some more. If you log in to GHTV with zero plays available then they will give you a daily reward of three plays so you can play a few of your favorite songs in the on-demand section.

Activision has also stated that they are going to have some holiday themed shows so be sure to watch out for that. What do you think about these Rival Challenges? Tell us in the comments below.
