Gears of War Backwards Compatibility Free Games Release Date Revealed

News: Microsoft has revealed when they will start rolling out codes that will allow Gears of War Ultimate Edition players to get the franchise for free on X

Microsoft announced earlier this year that if you bought Gears of War Ultimate Edition on Xbox One and played it online before December 31, 2015 you would receive the entire franchise that was on Xbox 360 for free via Xbox One’s new backwards compatibility feature. Some new details have just been released on how that is exactly going to work. You won’t be able to play these games on November 12 when the backwards compatibility feature launches but you won’t have to wait too long before you get them.

According to the Gears of War website codes will begin going out to Gears of War Ultimate Edition owners on December 1. These codes will come via a message on your Xbox One where you will be able to redeem it for your free games. It should be noted that these codes will be sent out in waves so you might have to wait a little while to get one but everyone who plays Gears of War Ultimate Edition online before December 31 will indeed receive a free code.

Once you receive your code and you download the Gears of War franchise you will be able to do everything you did on the Xbox 360, including online multiplayer. You can play with people who are either playing Gears of via backwards compatibility on Xbox One or on Xbox 360. The two platforms will be able to “talk” to one another to allow this to happen.

If you have DLC from previous Gears games they should be available to download as well once these Gears of War games become available. There is currently no way for you to purchase anything as it relates to Xbox 360 games or content on Xbox One so you will need to buy Xbox 360 items either on xbox.com or on an actual Xbox 360.

Please remember that you have until December 31 to take advantage of this offer. If you happen to play online on December 30 then Microsoft will see that and add you to the list. It might take a couple weeks to receive your code but you should definitely receive one.
