Halo 5 has been on the market for approximately one week and Microsoft has revealed that it has smashed records with the “biggest Halo launch in history.” So far Halo 5: Guardians has more than $400 million in global sales (combining software and hardware) which pushes the Halo franchise to over $5 billion in its lifetime.
Some interesting stats include gamers having already spent more than 21 million hours playing Halo 5 during its first week on the market. 12 million of those hours have been spent in the campaign where gamers have been discovering whether or not Master Chief is a traitor. That means that so far Halo fans have played over 9 million hours of Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer with nearly seven million multiplayer matches played across Arena and Warzone. In addition to that gamers are taking advantage of the new Req system with over 24 million REQ Packs acquired, totalling more than 568 million REQ cards.
During its opening week on the market Halo 5: Guardians also set a Guinness World Record for the most watched video game launch broadcast, setting a precedent with more than 330,000 unique streams on the evening of the broadcast. Throughout the week content from that broadcast generated 5.5 million total views. This all led to Halo 5: Guardians becoming the best selling digital game ever in the Xbox Store for an opening week.
“The success of Halo 5: Guardians is a testament to the innovative work from the entire team at 343 Industries to bring this installment to Xbox One and the incredible community of fans who have come to love the story, characters and gameplay central to the franchise,” said Phil Spencer, head of Xbox. “The game represents all the possibilities of Xbox One and has earned its place as the anchor title in the greatest holiday games lineup in Xbox history.”
