Final Glimpse: Another reason not to play in the snow... if you're an Ork.

Give game players more of what they love. That is the whole reason behind expansion packs. Take the formula that made the game a hit, add a few things, and sell it to the fans of the original. There is not a problem with this. And with Winter Assault, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War fans will get even more than most expansion packs offer; a whole new playable race.

Winter Assault will allow players to field legions of the Imperial Guard in this expansion pack to last year's top real-time-strategy title in an all new campaign that puts players in a race to control an Emperor Class Titan. The Imperial Guard, while seen throughout the original Dawn of War, were only playable in small doses during select missions. This time around they will be the focus of the single-player action and sporting a fully developed line of soldiers, vehicles, and buildings. Basically, it will be an entirely new game, not just an expansion pack. Heck, the two campaigns that Winter Assault will be sporting is more than many full-fledged releases come with these days.

Of course, the Imperial Guard will now be available to play in Dawn of War's fantastic multiplayer mode, too. Bringing the total race count for multiplayer mayhem up to five. Battle Royal matches between up to eight teams of Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, the forces of Chaos, and now the Imperial Guard will take place.

For those of you that already have your race of choice in the multiplayer mode, each of the four original races will feature new units in the Winter Assault expansion pack. Space Marine Chaplains, Chaos Khorne Berzerkers, Ork Mega Armored Nobs, and Eldar Firedragons are all being added to the fold, helping you fine-tune your army to match your battle style even more.

Final Thoughts
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War is getting a new lease on life. Not only is the "Game of the Year" edition hitting shelves this week, but Winter Assault, the game's first expansion pack, is coming later this month. Two new campaigns, new units, and an entire new playable army should make this a no-brained decision for fans of Dawn of War and Warhammer 40k in general.
