Quick Preview: Relive the raucous retro racing of yore!

Since Midway's previous collections of retro games have enjoyed such great success, it is not surprising that they are releasing yet another edition to satisfy our thirst for the golden oldies. Midway Arcade Treasures 3 will be a little different, however, as it focuses solely on their classic racing games.

The compilation will feature eight arcade racers, including Badlands (1989), a sprint racing game in a post-nuclear world where drivers shoot at targets and each other for points and powerups; Hydro Thunder (1998) a hydroplane racer;
Off Road Thunder: Mud, Sweat 'N Gears (1999); Race Drivin' (1990); San Francisco Rush The Rock: Alcatraz Edition (1996); San Francisco Rush 2049 (1999); S.T.U.N. Runner (1989), a futuristic polygon tunnel racer; and Super Off Road (with Bonus Tracks Pack).

Compared with other classic compilations, the games aren't that old but should still offer a good trip down nostalgia lane. The games have been tweaked for our modern sensibilities, so they will fully support the Xbox's analog thumbstick and triggers for steering and acceleration/braking, respectively. Midway also cleaned up some of the framerate issues of the originals, so the emulated games should run fast and smooth.

As with Midway's previous collections, little extras examining the history of each game will also be included.

Final Thoughts
With all of the recent talk about next-gen systems, it's kind of ironic that several retro compilations from not only Midway, but Namco, Tecmo and Capcom have been or will be released this year. Maybe that's a good thing as it gives today's gamers a chance to ignore the technical mumbo jumbo and go back to the simple days of good old pixelated fun. So get ready to race backwards in time when Midway Arcade Treasures 3 starts its engines at the end of September.
