Reviews: A fun little tower defense game filled with zombies, magic, and a specific sense of humor.

”Wizards

Wizards Wand of Epicosity is a tower defense game a bit unlike one I have played before. Granted while my experience in the genre isn’t a whole lot, I have played some Tower Defense games in the past and have enjoyed them, so I figured I would give this one a shot. The basic premise is the Wizard of Darkness has awakened and it is up to one man to defeat him. Unfortunately you accidentally kill that man so now it is up to you to get the job done.

Wizards Wand of Epicosity features magic spells, zombies, a teleporting castle, and more. Like with other Tower Defense games, you have to deal with increasingly more difficult waves of zombies as they try to destroy your castle. Along the way you will earn different types of currency that you can use in the store to bolster your defenses. This can range anywhere from trying to fortify the castle itself, to adding a new weapon or two, or bribing someone to help participate in your attacks on the enemies. You also have various potions to select from that can help with your health, your mana, a fortune cookie that will double your gold, gems and XP for 24 hours, and more. Obviously the more powerful items cost more money. During my time with this game I found there to be a decent amount of grinding if you want to save up for some of the more potent items. Also, there is a decent difficulty curve in this game, which might take some people by surprise if they aren’t used to the concept of Tower Defense. If you so choose you can also use real world money to buy gems, which will help you get some items much quicker than going through the standard way of earning them in the game.

To progress to different maps you need to find a set number of runes. You do this through combat. When you defeat an enemy they will often drop something for you to pick up. Every so often it might be a rune so you need to pay attention to what is going on amongst all of the chaos on the screen. As you progress in the game you will acquire more slots to put more spells in, which will definitely be beneficial as you get to some tougher enemies. Some of the more annoying enemies for me were the ones where my attacks did zero damage and the only way to eliminate them was to do a tornado spell which would literally throw them off the map, as long as you aimed it correctly. This spell is also great for eliminating a good number of enemies quickly, again, assuming you can aim it correctly. My most used offensive weapon was probably just a single bolt strike that did a decent amount of damage to normal enemies, along with a lightning strike, and using my wand when needed. As you get farther in the game you will notice different types of zombies as well, such as suicide zombies that will run straight towards your castle with a bomb. You need to be quick to use your wand on them or they will do some damage to your base. There are also special types of zombies that can hamper your actions such as freezing you or shocking you, so you will need to eliminate those guys when you see them to try and make your job a bit easier. You also need to be aware of your surroundings as enemies will come at you from all sides. If you are too focused on the bridge to the left, for example, you might begin to get overrun on the right side.

With all of that said, there are definitely some problems to be had here. It would be nice if the camera worked a little better so you could get a more accurate representation of enemies that were heading your way. There were also times when it seemed some of the spell casting wasn’t very accurate. I would be aiming for one guy but it would get the enemy standing next to him. That became very annoying when I was trying to eliminate a more powerful enemy before he got to where I was and instead, I took out a regular enemy that doesn’t pose as much of a threat. The game also had a strange quirk of sometimes going into a menu when I didn’t tell it to do so. There were times when I would be busy firing off a magic spell toward an enemy but then the screen popped up to select what slots I wanted to place magic spells in. It wasn’t the case of me accidentally hitting the wrong button either as I was always really careful about what I was doing, especially once this started happening.

Internet personality Tobuscus is also featured in this game and he is actually the character you control. The dialogue in the cutscenes will be extremely hit or miss though. If you enjoy the type of humor that Tobuscus has, you will definitely get a kick out of it and enjoy the banter. If, however, you aren’t a fan of that type of humor, you will probably largely roll your eyes and just want to get back to the gameplay. While that can certainly be said for most games, for some reason it seems a bit more prevalent in this instance.

Wizards Wand of Epicosity is a fun little tower defense game. If you are a fan of the genre you might want to give it a try. It is available for around $20 and features around 20 levels on two different maps. As I mentioned there is a bit of grinding if you want to earn enough money or gems to unlock some of the top tier stuff throughout the game, or you can simply buy gems in the store using real world money to expedite the process. Whichever route you choose to take, there is definitely some fun to be had here once you wrap your head around how everything works.
