News: Say "Hello World" to 100 million PS2s.
It's hard to argue with the people who say the PlayStation 2 is the most popular console ever and after today's announcement from Sony it just makes it even harder.
Five years and nine months from the time the PS2 launched in Japan was all it took for the system to surpass shipments of 100 million units. For comparisons sake, it took the PSone nine years and six months to become the first console to have 100 million shipped units.
Since that March 2000 morning 6200 PS2 games have been released across all territories. If you include backwards compatible PSone games in that count the number rises to 14,000 games. But remember, these numbers are counting duplicates across all territories.
PS2 gamers come from all over the world and the final totals look a little something like this:
Japan/Asia (launch date: March 4, 2000) - 22.22 million units
North America (launch date: October 26, 2000) - 40.65 million units
Europe (launch date: November 24, 2000) - 37.14 million units
So if you're one of those 100 million PS2 owners, keep your browsers peeled to Gaming Target for the rest of the PS2's life.
