News: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was only backward compatible for three days on Xbox One but that was enough for it to chart in the top ten.
NPD numbers have been released for the month of August with some of the usual suspects being on the list and a few new additions. The top 20 games in terms of sales for the month of August include:
1. Madden NFL 19++
2. Monster Hunter: World
3. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege
4. Grand Theft Auto V
5. Mario Kart 8+
6. Naruto To Boruto: Shinobi Striker
7. God of War
8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
9. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild+
10. Super Mario Odyssey+
11. Minecraft
12. Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy
13. Far Cry 5
14. Monster Hunter: Generations Ultimate
15. Call of Duty: WWII
16. Mario Tennis Aces+
17. Overwatch++
18. Lego The Incredibles
19. We Happy Few+
20. The Crew 2
If you see a “+” next to a game that means that digital sales were not included. So, for instance, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sold better than what you see above but exact numbers are not known because digital isn’t included. If you see a “++” next to a game that means that PC digital sales are not accounted for in this list.
Something to note is that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was the 8th best selling game of August. That is because Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 went backward compatible on Xbox One beginning on August 28. Once that happened Modern Warfare 2 was given a shot in the arm sales wise as people rushed to GameStop (or wherever else they buy used games) to scoop it up to play on their Xbox One. There have been ongoing rumors about a Modern Warfare 2 remaster similar to what the original Modern Warfare received but until then, at least Xbox gamers have a way to play it on this generation of consoles.
According to NPD, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was the 321st best selling game for the month of July. It was the 8th best selling game in August, after only being backward compatible for three days. Backward compatibility continues to be important to people and, hopefully, all of the next-gen consoles will launch with this feature.
