News: The developer behind Killer Instinct and many other titles has just been acquired by Amazon but what does this mean?

Double Helix Games

In a shocking turn of events, Amazon apparently now owns the gaming studio Double Helix, according to TechCrunch. The deal was for IP and talent who will continue to operate out of Orange County.

There have been rumors for a little while now that Amazon has been looking to get in to the gaming industry. A lot of gamers might know Amazon from their impressive “lightning deals” that they have from time to time, especially during the holidays. Now it appears that Amazon wants to be more closely involved with the gaming industry by acquiring Double Helix. The rumors from VG247.com were that Amazon was going to launch an Android based console that will compete directly with Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony.

Double Helix has been around for a while, however, their most recent claim to fame is the Killer Instinct game that is on Xbox One. Their other games have ranged from good to mediocre with other titles such as Men in Black, Marc Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and more also a part of their catalog. They also have a new game coming out later this month with the new Strider game.

Amazon gave this statement to TechCrunch:

“Amazon has acquired Double Helix as part of our ongoing commitment to build innovative games for customers.”

Amazon has said that Double Helix’s current and future lineup of titles will be supported but I’m sure the big question on everyone’s mind is Killer Instinct. The Killer Instinct IP is owned by Microsoft so that isn’t going anywhere, however, how will this impact future development on the franchise? If Microsoft wants to release another Killer Instinct title a few years from now, will they have to get a new developer?

What do you think about this turn of events? Do you like the fact that Amazon is now officially part of the gaming industry?
