News: Take that John Woo!

Yosuke Hayashi of Team Ninja and Yoshio Sakamoto, "the father of "Metroid," recently sat down with 1UP to discuss the upcoming Metroid: Other M. Beyond the rather bold statement that Hayashi considers Other M a "Team Ninja game" as opposed to the latest Metroid game, the duo also revealed that the disc will contain a full-fledged Metroid movie.

Built from the game's cutscenes and several pre-recorded gameplay segments, Other M's Theater Mode will run two hours and retell the title's storyline for those that manage to beat the game.

Sakamoto explains the Theater Mode here:

"There's a 'theater mode' that lets you view all of the cutscenes linked together seamlessly as a single movie. We placed just as much weight on enjoying the story as we did on the action aspects of this game, but it's hard to fully communicate a storyline in a video game with just one playthrough. At the same time, though, it's asking a lot of players to beat the game twice to get it all, so that's where the idea for that mode came from. It lets you make a lot of discoveries, things you missed or dialogue that makes more sense in retrospect. I hope it helps people understand the story better."

Years ago, the rights to a live-action Metroid film were acquired by famed action director John Woo. Nothing ever came of the deal, so it looks like this is the closest we're going to get to a Metroid movie. For now at least.

Metroid: Other M will be released for the Wii on August 31.
