Game of August: Sleeping Dogs or Darksiders 2?

Sleeping Dogs
Darksiders 2

News: You'll never guess what the top selling game of 2009 is. OK, you probably will.

The NPD Group has supplied Gamasutra with a list of the five best selling games on the PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 through the first half of 2009.

The three lists have few surprises, but here they are:

PlayStation 3
1. Killzone 2
2. Resident Evil 5
3. Street Fighter IV
4. UFC 2009 Undisputed
5. MLB 09: The Show

Wii
1. Wii Fit
2. Wii Play
3. Mario Kart Wii
4. EA Sports Active
5. Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga

Xbox 360
1. Resident Evil 5
2. UFC 2009 Undisputed
3. Call of Duty: World at War
4. Halo Wars
5. Street Fighter IV

It's interesting to note how few of the games on the Wii list were released in 2009. It's also intersting that one of the games on the Wii list (Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga) was released in 2007. That kind of sales longevity is practically unheard of. The popularity of UFC 2009 Undisputed should also be noted as previous UFC games were strictly niche titles. It just goes to show you how far mixed martial arts have come in the last few years.

With a little quick and dirty math, it's possible to create a list of the five overall bestselling games in 2009, which also offers few surprises:

1. Wii Fit (Wii)
2. Wii Play (Wii)
3. Mario Kart Wii (Wii)
4. Resident Evil 5 (Xbox 360)
5. UFC 2009 Undisputed (Xbox 360)

We'll have more on the business side of gaming soon.
